FINAL Assignment! Due 5/15
Charitable Giving #2 Charitable Giving #2 Due 5/15 Last week I asked you to watch a TED Talk and interview two people about charitable giving. This week, I would like you to research your own organizations and make donations to ones you feel fit your values best. First, we need some money to work with. Recently, there was a government stimulus payment made to individuals who make less than $75,000 per year ($1,200) and couples ($2,400) who make less than $150,000 per year. The intention of the payment is to help people who are struggling financially due to job or income loss or to encourage people to spend money on things like eating out at restaurants, buying items, or charitable contributions. You now have $1,200 to donate to one or more organizations. You can also buy yourself something on your wish list. Part 1: Read the article, Want To Donate Your Stimulus Check? Here's How Some Washingtonians Did It and answer the following questions.
Part 2: Your turn Research two organizations that you would like to consider making a donation to. Thye can be local, like the La Plata County Humane Society or international, like the World Wildlife Fund. Suggestion: If you’re unsure of where to start Google your interest and see what comes up. For example, if I am interested in donating money to help feed hungry kids in the US a Google search of “hungry kids nonprofit” brings up No Kid Hungry . On the main page is an article linked about helping kids affected by COVID-19. Now, your turn. Organization #1:

Part 3 You had $1,200 to spend: How did you spend it (charitable giving, personal spending) and what is your reasoning?

I have been slow this week to assign something new because I have been thinking through my ideas. I'd like to spend the next few weeks looking at charitable giving-making donations of money and time to organizations you value. Generally, we explore charitable giving in a different way in class, by choosing an organization and giving based on your personal budget, but we're going to dig a little deeper in the new online format. I hope you enjoy this unit! Let me know if I can help you.
Make a copy of the Google sheet and share it with me. Can helping others make us happier? Due 5/8/20 We are living in uncertain times that none of us have ever been through before and everything as we know it is changing. I recently came across a Ted talk, titled Helping others makes us happier, and it got me thinking about volunteering and charitable giving (making donations to a non-profit) and how that might be changing. In Consumer Math we explore making donations as part of our monthly budget based on what we value. For example, I am a member of the La Plata County Humane Society, make a monthly donation, buy supplies they put on their organizational wish list and foster kittens. Being a part of the Humane Society makes me feel good and supporting them in as many ways as I can makes me feel even better. Your assignment for this week is to watch the TED Talk video, answer some questions about it and then interview two people about their experiences with giving. We will spend the next few weeks exploring charitable giving, from the perspective of the donor and the non-profit (like the Humane Society) to see what it’s all about. I hope you enjoy the TED Talk and connecting with two people about their charitable giving experiences!
